ABOUT ANDREW

Andrew MacDonald-Smith is a seasoned theatre actor, director, and administrator with over two decades of experience in the industry. Hailing from Southern Alberta, Andrew moved to Edmonton to attend the Theatre Arts program at MacEwan University. Over the next 20+ years he has appeared on every major professional stage across Western Canada, including The Citadel Theatre, Edmonton Opera, Theatre Calgary, Vertigo Theatre, The Royal Manitoba Theatre Centre, and The Arts Club. Andrew’s onstage work has garnered multiple accolades, including Sterling Awards and Betty Mitchell Awards. 

A mainstay of the Edmonton Theatre scene, Andrew has co-hosted monthly variety shows at The Varscona Theatre, including Oh Susanna! and That's Terrific!, and has written and performed numerous cabaret performances across Canada. His solo shows, Never Fully Dressed Without a Band, a tribute to Big Band music and Broadway tunes and My First Hundred Years, an evening of entirely true made up stories, have most recently been seen at The Club in the Citadel, in collaboration with the Citadel and Edmonton Opera.

In 2006, Andrew made his Broadway debut in the acclaimed musical Avenue Q at The Golden Theatre in New York City, in a role created for him and his puppet Maurice Tipo. Andrew has also built artistic connections with West End London theatre makers Mischief Theatre performing in their pre-broadway tryout of Peter Pan Goes Wrong.

Andrew has been a long-time artistic associate of Teatro Live! (formerly Teatro La Quindicina), performing in over 20 productions by playwright and company founder Stewart Lemoine. Highlights include A Grand Time in the Rapids, At the Zenith of the Empire, Cocktails at Pam’s, What Gives?, Pith!, and Witness to a Conga, with the latter two earning Sterling Award nominations. In 2007, he co-wrote the books for the musicals Everybody Goes to Mitzi’s and The Infinite Shiver with Jocelyn Ahlf, Farren Timoteo, and Ryan Sigurdson.

Andrew’s directing career began through puppetry, leading the puppetry direction for productions of Avenue Q at Stage West Calgary and The Citadel Theatre, as well as Little Shop of Horrors at The Mayfield. He developed his skills through assistant directing at Teatro Live!, and has directed cabaret performances, short films, awards shows, and full productions such as Seussical The Musical and It’s A Wonderful Life,

From 2020 to 2025, Andrew served as Artistic Director of Teatro Live!, leading the company through significant growth and restructuring. He continues to pursue directing opportunities, combining his extensive performance experience, collaborative approach, and administrative expertise to guide productions.
